PLATFORMS: Microsoft NT server 4.0, HP-UX 10.20.

BACKGROUND: AMD is a global supplier of integrated circuits for the personal and network computer and communications markets. AMD produces processors, flash memories, programmable logic devices and products for communications and networking applications. The company was founded in 1989 and is based in Sunnyvale, California. (NYSE: AMD)

PROBLEM SOLVED: AMD needed 150GB of fast, reliable storage.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: The HDS 5700E delivers industrial-strength RAID with maximum uptime, centralized network management and ultra- high speed performance that is flexible and scalable.

The 5700E Intelligent Storage System supports SCSI fast, fast and wide, and Ultra-SCSI connections, with transfer rates of up to 80 MB/sec. It includes Fibre Channel with speeds of up to 100MB/sec over distances approaching 100 meters and over 120 connections per loop. Fibre Channel allows the 5700E to be connected to legacy systems, networks and applications without sacrificing the future extensibility of transfer rates and performance. The 5700E may be attached to LAN servers supporting common operating environments such as Windows NT, Novell NetWare, UNIX-based servers and workstations and the AS/400.

STRENGTHS: It is a well-engineered box. Our benchmarks showed about a two-time performance increase over the competition. It really shone in sequential access operations. Additionally, it was easy to configure and install.

WEAKNESSES: The only weakness that we could find in our tests was a lower than expected performance on random access operations.

SELECTION CRITERIA: We chose HDS 5700E based on the performance of the unit and the support offered. Our first HDS 5700E RAID system performed so well for us that we bought a second one.

DELIVERABLES: This unit provides OS image storage for the Processsor Validation Lab.

VENDOR SUPPORT: Infinite Solutions, Inc., of Austin has been absolutely outstanding. You would have to search far and wide to find a better network storage and backup company. Hitachi also has an excellent support organization in our region.

DOCUMENTATION: Product documentation has been used in very few instances because whenever we need anything, someone from Hitachi comes out to take care of it.
