August 4, 2011 – Seeking an end-to-end stack in the burgeoning Hadoop marketplace, Dell is teaming up with Cloudera on a big data solution and set of services and training.

The Dell Cloudera solution for Hadoop links Dell’s server and networking with Cloudera’s Distribution, management tools, training and technological support with Apache Hadoop. That includes Cloudera Distribution for Apache Hadoop (CDH), Dell’s recently launched Crowbar software and Cloudera Enterprise combined with the Dell PowerEdge C2100 server and PowerConnect 6248. A joint service agreement is also set for customers of the software and hardware, according to a news release on the partnership.

Along with existing technology and offerings, Dell backs up Cloudera’s technology with wider customer reach and established functionality, says Ed Albanese, head of business development at Cloudera.

“Customers are clearly looking for the ability to put a relatively significant amount of storage on the back of each node … and frankly, customers want a solution that has been tested, has been validated,” Albanese says.

The partnered release and services answers the trend of Apache Hadoop adoption for large-scale structured and unstructured data sets, said Merv Adrian, information management research vice president at Gartner.

“[D]eployment and management complexity, as well as requirements for highly specialized knowledge, have been barriers to adoption,” Adrian said in a news release on the announcement. “Providing complete end-to-end solutions for Apache Hadoop deployments will be key to significantly speeding its adoption within mainstream enterprise environments.”
