CATEGORY: Analytic Applications
REVIEWER: Mark Mullin, senior planning analyst and CorVu project manager for Gwinnett Health System.
BACKGROUND: Gwinnett Health System, a member of the PROMINA Health System in Atlanta, Georgia, is a not-for-profit healthcare network providing a wide array of high-quality healthcare services to Atlanta's Gwinnett County market. The Gwinnett Health System is comprised of three hospitals, a primary care physician network, a nursing home and a comprehensive array of outpatient services. The system is supported by more than 3,000 associates and approximately 600 affiliated physicians.
PLATFORMS: CorVu is currently housed on a Dell PIII 450MHz server with 128MB of memory.
PROBLEM SOLVED: Gwinnett Health System end users needed to access and analyze corporate data for customer satisfaction, associate retention, financial performance and operational improvement. The end goal is the creation of a true strategic management system across and through the entire organization. The Gwinnett Health System selected a solution that was highly functional and focused yet did not require extensive training for the end user.
PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: CorVu's CorManage provides dynamic performance management and business intelligence functionality. End users are presented with data in both graphical and tabular formats; and the built-in, drill-down capability allows not only the display of performance results, but presentation of the relationships between distinct results. Since implementation, the Gwinnett Health System has focused on the definition of strategic measurements and the development of associated targets. The Health System is developing a better understanding of its existing data systems and operations with the implementation of CorVu. CorManage currently is in a roll- out phase with the executive group of the organization, with an expected installation for managers within the coming months. CorVu will continue to grow into a key enterprise-wide resource.
STRENGTHS: Using CorManage, the Gwinnett Health System is beginning to link performance results to strategy, with initiatives and action plans linked to performance objectives. With the establishment of cause-and-effect diagrams, the organization will be able to view how performance improvements in one area affect performance in another. Because the solution does not require extensive training for the end user, performance measures can be more widely circulated throughout the organization in a paperless fashion. Additionally, a fundamental benefit of a strategic performance management system such as this is the ability to gather feedback from stakeholders throughout the enterprise. CorManage provides a collaborative communication framework that allows users to comment on performance results. As users share their performance insights with other users, they promote knowledge sharing and organizational learning.
WEAKNESSES: CorVu performance is maximized through accessing one unique data source or ODBC connection at a time. In the current healthcare environment, data is stored in numerous locations in a variety of formats. Scheduled queries allow for data to be retrieved and accessed from multiple locations, but providing real-time access to multiple ODBC data sets would be a solid enhancement.
SELECTION CRITERIA: CorManage was chosen for its functionality and ease of use. CorVu provides several advantages over other end-user reporting and query solutions. CorManage is a performance management application that includes a powerful balanced scorecard with complete business intelligence capability. Users can be easily trained on CorVu, and they can access data with a simple point-and-click process to run complex queries and create detailed reports.
DELIVERABLES: Currently, the Health System is developing queries focusing on the areas of customer satisfaction, associate retention, financial performance and operational improvement. Gwinnett Health System end users are able to extract information from a data warehouse and perform analysis. Previously, associates were unable to access this data in one location or outside of a paper environment. Because CorVu makes accessing and understanding highly complex data very simple, each of the end users is now empowered with timely performance information at their fingertips.
VENDOR SUPPORT: CorVu developed numerous reports tailored to the Gwinnett Health System's organizational needs. The implementation process included on-site training, consulting and implementation assistance with an emphasis on defined deliverables.
DOCUMENTATION: The documentation is comprehensive, and ongoing access to technical resources has been beneficial for continued development of the system.
