Greenplum and Daxpy Join Forces to Help Airlines of All Sizes Take Off

  • May 31 2006, 1:00am EDT

Greenplum has partnered with Daxpy LLC to maximize revenue management efforts in the airline industry with an innovative business intelligence (BI) solution. The companies' joint offering - Greenplum's open source Bizgres MPP database software and Daxpy's advanced analytics tool suite - makes it possible for airlines of all sizes to more affordably and effectively analyze passenger forecast-related data.

"Airline industry experts contend that even modest increases in forecast accuracy significantly improve earnings," said Scott Yara, president, Greenplum. "By partnering with Daxpy, we are able to dramatically increase that accuracy for airlines by delivering powerful, large-scale data analysis at a low cost."

In a separate announcement, the partners announced their first joint customer, Frontier Airlines, which is deploying the Greenplum-Daxpy solution as part of its commitment to using advanced technology to deliver world-class customer service at the lowest prices.

The solution brings together the cost and performance benefits of the Bizgres MPP data warehouse solution, with its unique "shared-nothing" architecture and ability to run on commodity servers, and the targeted analysis tools, alerts and reports of Daxpy's Business Reporting and Intelligence Tool Suite (Brits) for Revenue Management.

"Greenplum's Bizgres MPP and Daxpy's Brits software are critical to our commitment to leverage technology to provide the best prices and overall customer experience," said Robert Rapp, CIO, Frontier Airlines. "The combined solution allows us to analyze massive amounts of forecast data on low-cost servers. This price-performance benefit provides real competitive advantages."

Current BI offerings make it cost-prohibitive for many airlines to store more than a day's worth of data. Companies that deploy traditional BI solutions typically pay upward of $1 million per terabyte for systems whose performance leaves much to be desired. The low cost and high performance of Bizgres MPP, combined with the airline-centric advanced analytic capabilities of Daxpy's Brits software, enable airlines such as Frontier to forecast more accurately because they can analyze weeks, not just days, of data. It is expected that the ability to leverage significantly more relevant data to develop forecasts will result in more effective pricing and increased revenues and earnings.

"This is truly a breakthrough in expanding the market for advanced analytics to the new generation of smaller and regional airlines," explained Kirk Abbott, CEO and founder, Daxpy LLC. "Our airline customers need to evaluate hundreds of thousands of data points a day - passenger bookings, forecasts and ticketing, by fare, product, departure times, market and days prior to departure, etc. Until we joined forces with Greenplum, it was not economically feasible for most airlines to store significant amounts of historical data."

Bizgres MPP extends the capabilities of the PostgreSQL database system - already widely regarded as best-in-class for enterprise features such as transaction processing, data integrity and security. As a PostgreSQL-based, software-only, clustered solution, Bizgres MPP enables companies to grow their data warehouse capabilities in conjunction with their needs.
