Each year DAMA recognizes an outstanding individual who has contributed significantly to the advancement of information resource management as a practical discipline. We are pleased to announce Larry P. English as the winner of the 1998 DAMA International Achievement Award. The award was presented at the 10th Annual DAMA International and Meta Data Conference held in Boston this past March.

Larry English is in excellent company. Past years' winners include John Zachman, Bill Inmon, Barbara von Halle and Clive Finkelstein.

Upon accepting this award English remarked, "Receiving this award reminds me of an experience I had early in my consulting career. Someone came up to me and told me they had implemented some of the things I had been advising them about. This became a pivotal experience for me as it made me realize that people are actually implementing the things I say! This experience indelibly marked in my awareness the incredible responsibility and stewardship I have to my clients and students to advise and teach them the 'right' things to do. All of us in the data management profession must faithfully carry out our stewardship accountabilities to lead our organizations to wisely manage and exploit their information assets. "

Larry English is president of Information Impact International, Inc., and is an internationally recognized expert in information management. His methodology for data quality improvement, Total Quality data Management (TQdM), has been implemented in several organizations worldwide. In addition to his monthly column in DM Review, "Plain English on Data Quality," he is currently writing a book on data quality.

Mr. English has long been an active supporter of DAMA. He is a founder of the Nashville DAMA chapter and serves on the advisory board of DAMA International. Additionally he has spoken at countless DAMA events, both at the International and chapter levels. He has played an active role in numerous professional organizations, various standards committees and serves on the advisory board to Digital Inc.'s Data Warehouse Conference and the editorial review board of DM Review.

In recognition of this impressive portfolio of service to the data management profession, Larry English was the strong choice of the DAMA chapters in this year's voting.

Looking ahead, DAMA International and DAMA Phoenix are jointly sponsoring the Fall DAMA Symposium, November 1-3, in Mesa, Arizona. The theme of the conference is "Data Administration in the 21st Century: A New Vision for Information Management," with keynotes by Larry English, Claudia Imhoff and John Zachman.
