It's a busy time of year for DAMA! We've just wrapped up two great conferences-- DAMA Australia 98 in Canberra and the DAMA International 1998 Fall Symposium in Phoenix, Arizona--and are now gearing up for 1999. Read on for the latest. DAMA International is accepting nominations through December 15 for the 1999 Individual Achievement Award. This award recognizes practitioners who have advanced the understanding, development and practice of managing information as a key enterprise asset.
Each chapter is invited to submit one nominee by December 15, 1998. The slate of nominees will go out to chapter officers around the first of the year. All ballots must be submitted to DAMA International no later than February 28, 1999. We'll announce the winner at DAMA International's Spring Symposium and Meta Data Conference in Atlantic City, New Jersey, U.S.A., April 19-22. For more information on how to participate, contact your local chapter.
Voting for the 1999 DAMA International Board of Directors is underway November 6 through December 15. E-mail Lynn Tenney, LynnTenney@compuserve.com, for more information.
Check out our IRM discussion forum at www.dama.org to post questions, answers, information and opinions on IRM topics.
We're often asked for guidance on the administration of a data management organization, such as what are the "typical" staffing ratios of data administrators and DBAs to developers? How are successful data management departments organized? Are there any standard job descriptions that work? While DAMA as an organization does not formally maintain such information, we facilitate a forum for exchanging ideas and experiences. If you have any compiled information on this subject and would like to make it broadly available, please send it along to firstname.lastname@example.org.
An even more frequent inquiry is about job listings.
DAMA International recently announced the creation of an information resource management (IRM) job listing bulletin board, accessible from www.dama.org. One of several practical forums at the DAMA Web site, the job listing service is available to the public for posting job openings in the field of IRM.
DAMA International is often asked about standards and guidelines for data administration/resource management organizations. Although DAMA is not a standards body, many of our members have contributed to ANSI and ISO standards development. DAMA Chicago has produced a DRM standards manual, now in its second edition which can be ordered via DAMA International (www.dama.org).
As always, we welcome your feedback and participation. You may direct comments to me, VP_Communications@dama.org, or through our Web site.
