Dear Readers,

As we begin another new year, we should be able to see an upturn in the economy, a turn that will – in large part – be based on technology and the multitude of benefits that accrue from proper selection and deployment of that technology. Organizations are now moving to a more balanced technology approach that incorporates the requirements of the entire organization rather than individual departments or divisions. Following a very difficult 2002, this year should see at least moderate growth as the pressures on most organizations significantly lighten.

I want to remind all of you of an excellent opportunity to showcase your organization's best use of technology. The new year means it is time again for our annual World Class Solution awards. If you feel your company has a world-class implementation that encompasses business intelligence, data warehousing or analytics, please be sure to contact Valerie Schauer,, to obtain the guidelines.

This month I am pleased to welcome a new columnist to DM Review. Shari Rogalski, who currently leads Accenture's North American Business Intelligence practice, will write "Business Intelligence: 360º Insight." In this column, Shari and her Accenture colleagues will approach business intelligence holistically, focusing on implementation objectives and challenges. You can find her first column on page 54 of this issue. Welcome Shari, and thank you for your willingness to share your expertise with all of our readers!

In addition to all of our regular columns, this month's issue also features articles from Henry Morris, Nigel Pendse, Larissa Moss and Rand Losey. After reading all of this month's columns and articles, you will be armed with the collective intelligence of a highly respected group of experts and ready to face any challenges that 2003 may present. Of course, each issue will provide further ammunition for your cause. Use this knowledge wisely – we are not responsible for misuse!

Thanks for reading DM Review – and best wishes for the New Year!
