Dear Readers,

This year's DM Review 100 features the premier companies that are providing the strategic solutions for business intelligence and data warehousing. The companies comprising the DM Review 100 are selected by our readers as the result of an exhaustive study conducted by Market Perspectives, a third-party research organization. Starting on page 52, this issue features the DM Review 100 award methodology, followed by executive responses to our question: How is your company providing real business value to your customers and what do you consider your company's greatest achievement in the last 12 months?

Not surprisingly, 9 of the top 10 in the 2001 DM Review 100 were in the top 20 for both 1999 and 2000. Oracle claimed the top spot for the first time by providing a completely integrated data warehousing and business intelligence infrastructure, which encompasses ETL, OLAP and data mining. SAS, a perennially highly ranked company in our survey, captured the second spot by continuing to dominate in business intelligence by enabling their customers to create value and meet their strategic objectives. IBM climbed back to the third spot by driving business intelligence functionality such as data mining, spatial analysis and OLAP into DB2, giving customers real-time business analytics. Cognos moved up to the number-four position by providing a business intelligence solution that offers mission-critical business intelligence performance and scalability through a broad base of information delivery options. Computer Associates finished in the number five position as it continued to focus on e-business which has become an integral part of every business making it possible for customers, partners, suppliers and employees to communicate and conduct transactions. Others in the top 10 include Teradata, a division of NCR (6); Microsoft (7); SAP (8); MicroStrategy (9); and PeopleSoft (10).

I hope that the responses given by each of this year's DM Review 100 can help you select the right hardware, software and consulting services to realize your goals in the coming year.

Thanks for reading DM Review, and best wishes for a peaceful holiday season!
