BACKGROUND: GTE Corporation provides data services including dial-up and high-speed Internet access for residential customers and Fortune 500 companies. GTE also offers directories and telecommunications-based information services, aircraft-passenger telecommunications and subsidiaries engaged in financing, insurance, leasing and other activities. GTE's telephone and wireless subsidiaries provide many types of communications services. GTE's Internetworking subsidiary offers a wide range of Internet and internetworking services and solutions. GTE offers a broad portfolio of value-added wholesale products and services, ranging from local access and transport to complex business services. In the wholesale market, GTE is committed to enhancing their presence and developing a loyal customer base by providing their customer with all they need.

PLATFORMS: ForecastX Wizard by John Galt Solutions, Inc. runs on Windows NT, 95 and 98.

PROBLEM SOLVED: GTE Wholesale Markets is divided into four service areas: wireless carriers, Internet service providers, long distance carriers and local service providers. Products and services for these markets range from calling services to optical networks. With new technologies and trends in the telecommunications market changing every day, GTE faced the challenge of forecasting the growth and demand of these established products in their wholesale markets. GTE needed a product and a methodology that could help determine which products and services would continue to provide growth and revenue to the 75-year-old company. How would these products and services act in the future with the changing trends and market events? Needing both a methodology and product to forecast volatile wholesale markets, GTE required that the vendor have expertise in forecasting and help establish the forecasting process.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: John Galt Solutions, Inc.'s ForecastX Wizard provided GTE with accurate statistical methods for product forecasting. The ForecastX Wizard integrated seamlessly into existing business systems to provide a scalable solution that could be used in any business unit. John Galt Solutions, Inc. also provided GTE with a two-day training seminar. This training was customized to specifically address GTE's needs for establishing a forecasting process for network services in wholesale markets. The training explained basic statistical and forecasting methods so that GTE planners could analyze the results of the forecasts and make the most profitable decisions. The final section of the training focused on GTE's specific forecasting challenges, enabling planners to implement methods of forecasting wholesale markets based on trends and volatile data. John Galt Solutions, Inc. worked closely with GTE to plan and develop a process that can be supported internally. This allowed GTE to explore the emerging wholesale markets.

STRENGTHS: John Galt's training session combined with the ForecastX Wizard enabled our planners to see immediate benefits from their forecasting process. We were able to visualize and define the growth of the wholesale markets and train our planners on how to use the forecasting process to maximize our business solutions.

WEAKNESSES: With ForecastX Wizard there is always more than one way to accomplish any given task. It's sometimes difficult to know which method is the best solution for any given problem. This issue is easily remedied with a quick call to John Galt's excellent technical support.

SELECTION CRITERIA: After reviewing several forecasting solution providers, GTE decided to work with John Galt because ForecastX Wizard is a tool that is easy to use and support. John Galt also provided the forecasting expertise that would help GTE planners develop the necessary skills to accurately forecast for growth in the wholesale market.

DELIVERABLES: The ForecastX Wizard and training provided GTE with the framework and tools to effectively plan for trends and changes in wholesale markets.

DOCUMENTATION: Complete documentation followed after the training session and provided GTE with the reference needed to answer the most basic and technical questions. The documentation is thorough and complete.
