BACKGROUND: Sunbeam Health Division is a strategic business unit of Sunbeam Corporation and is the leading provider of personal healthcare items and scales. Health-O-Meter is a market leading innovator in this area and currently controls 70 percent of the United States scale market. Operational excellence has been one of the key factors in Health-O-Meter's success.

PLATFORMS: ForecastX is run on Windows NT and a J.D. Edwards platform.

PROBLEM SOLVED: In a move to increase operation efficiencies, Sunbeam Health Division chose to bring their forecasting process in house. This move was partnered with the desire to create a statistical-based forecast that they could compare against their own results. ForecastX from John Galt Solutions, Inc. has enabled them to gain control of their integrated forecasting process. It also enabled them to reduce their forecasting cycle time, increase accuracy and more effectively manage large amounts of data and information for strategic marketing purposes.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: Integrated into the inventory-management system, ForecastX was customized to meet Sunbeam's forecasting and planning needs. ForecastX captures historical data, performs batch forecasting and allows sales and marketing departments to add input into the equation. The results are collaborative, real-time forecasts that allow Sunbeam to manage and control their inventory and forecasting process. The increased efficiency in production planning also allows for better relationships with key business partners due to more accurate forecasts.

STRENGTHS: ForecastX enables management and other departments to make robust changes to forecasts based on sales and marketing strategies. ForecastX helps to enhance the communication channels between strategic marketing and production planning departments.

WEAKNESSES: ForecastX was lacking in documentation when the solution was implemented, but customer support and training made up the difference.

DELIVERABLES: The deliverables include the ForecastX framework for managing Sunbeam's forecasting process and exception reports that allow Sunbeam to create customer demand, inventory and future-order reports with comparative forecasts.
