Foothill Transit Keeps on Rolling with Corporate Radar

BACKGROUND: Foothill Transit, created in 1988, is one of the largest and most successful transit competitive contracting efforts ever undertaken in the United States. With 299 buses on 32 transit routes, Foothill serves more than 17 million riders annually. Foothill Transit is known in the industry for adopting best of breed technology to create industry-leading best practices in operations and safety.

PLATFORMS: Corporate Radar is installed on a Windows 2000 Server with a single 2 GHz processor with 2GB RAM and 60GB of storage.

PROBLEM SOLVED: Foothill Transit has 13 different systems ranging from financial management programs to maintenance and scheduling applications from which we needed reports. The primary challenge was that reporting from all of these systems was requiring many days of manual labor and was not automated. Foothill Transit needed a way to extract data from all of its systems and reduce the information delivery times from weekly and monthly to daily or real-time while reducing labor needs in the process.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: Corporate Radar connects to all of Foothill's data sources to deliver complete information solutions for the entire enterprise including finance, operations, marketing, administration and IT. Corporate Radar is delivered via a 100% browser-based interface including multidimensional reports, charts and key performance indicators (KPIs). This helps drive user adoption and lower the cost of maintenance because there are no thick software clients to support. Report requests that previously required hours to process are now created by users independently in seconds displaying information in real time. End users have prescribed gauges and alerts based on their user role and they can create business activity monitoring (BAM) gauges and alerts by simply clicking on any data point, in any report. Corporate Radar allows decision-makers within the organization to spend more time analyzing actionable information instead of creating reports.

STRENGTHS: The graphical user interface is very easy to use. In the past, reporting required manual re-entry and it was static. The drill-down functionality allows for key evaluation of performance on a real-time basis. The solution is also easy to use versus the previous multiple step process. Corporate Radar is very cost-effective when evaluated against other industry business intelligence solutions. Corporate Radar also installed in one-third the time presented by competitive proposals. The Corporate Radar installation was completed under-budget and on-time.

WEAKNESSES: The challenge at Foothill Transit is connecting to the older proprietary databases. Corporate Radar was ultimately able to successfully connect to these custom systems, but it did require a few days.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Foothill Transit's major reasons for selecting Corporate Radar were ease of use and functionality. Corporate Radar was able to demonstrate the ability to present relevant data very early in the selections process. Corporate Radar's 100% browser-based interface was easy to use, ensuring higher user adoption. Corporate Radar is also a complete solution incorporating data warehouse, business intelligence and portal functionality in one integrated application. Foothill Transit was also looking for a solution that could provide maximum benefit to our executives and decision-makers with the least amount of implementation and support cost.

DELIVERABLES: Corporate Radar created a data warehouse that extracted the data elements from the 13 different data sources required to present actionable information to users on a real-time or scheduled basis. Leveraging Corporate Radar's application, users can access reports via the integrated portal and also have personalized key performance gauges and alerts "pushed" out to them on a self-service basis.

VENDOR SUPPORT: Corporate Radar has been able deliver timely and professional support both on site and remotely.

DOCUMENTATION: Corporate Radar delivered complete documentation including guides for specific user roles such as report creators and administrators. Corporate Radar also customized the guides for Foothill Transit's specific needs. The full-color guides outline frequently used processes step by step.
