Executive management is the leading driver of business intelligence in organizations, according to the 2018 Wisdom of Crowds Business Intelligence Market Study recently released by consulting firm Dresner Advisory Services.
The annual report is a broad assessment of the BI market, providing a comprehensive look at key user trends, attitudes, and intentions. For each study, users contribute their opinion on topics related to their current and planned use of BI and are asked to prioritize technologies and initiatives strategic to BI.
The research is based on data collected on usage and deployment trends, products, and vendors.
A huge majority of organizations are using BI for executive management, with 29 percent of the participating organizations saying they always use it for that function, 39 percent often using it and 19 percent sometimes using it.
The next highest function driving BI is operations (which was the leading driver in 2016 and 2017). Nearly two thirds of the organizations are using BI for operations either always or often.
Other leading functions for BI include sales, finance, marketing, IT, and strategic planning. While functional influence may roll up to a centralized program or strategy, the report said, BI tactics and influence are widely distributed in organizations.
Better decision-making remains the top BI objective for 2018, the study said. Other key objectives include improved operational efficiency and growth in revenues.
