Worldwide storage software revenues totaled $4.9 billion in 2001, a slight three percent increase from a year earlier, says Dataquest Inc. In 2001, EMC Corp. remained the leading storage software vendor, with 2001 of $1.496 billion, and a 30.4 percent market share, up from 1.353 billion in revenue and a 28.3 percent share in 2000.

The market's second-largest vendor was Veritas Software Corp., with 2001 revenue of $977.3 million and a 19.8 percent market share. It is followed by IBM Corp. with 701.2 million in revenue and a 14.2% share; Computer Associates International Inc with $202.9 million in revenue and a 4.1 percent share; and Compaq Computer Corp., with $198.3 million in revenue and a four percent share.

"Six of the top-10 vendors were able to grow software revenue in a very challenging year," says Carolyn DiCenzo, chief analyst for Gartner Dataquest's storage group.
