Even though the ink on the acquisition document is barely dry and the industry is waiting to see how IBM’s $1 billion purchase of Informix’s database software business will eventually play out, industry analysts are already saying that this is a deal Informix had to make.

"Informix has always been known for developing good technology such as the work they’ve done with object-orientation, but they weren’t a marketing company,” says Mike Schiff, vice president of e-business and business intelligence at Current Analysis Inc., Sterling, Va. “I think IBM acquired them for their technology and their base of installed customers.”
