Question: I am building a data warehouse for a financial company and we have a need to show data in three currencies - dollar, pound and Euro. I was thinking to first build the data mart with facts and dimensions in dollars and later convert them in other currencies in the reports. Does anyone know any best practice method from the data warehouse perspective how this can be handled. I am really looking at it from the warehouse point of view not the OLTP point of view.
Evan Levy's Answer: This is a very common problem for businesses when they operate in multiple countries. There are a few approaches in storing the data, and it depends on the existence (or nonexistence) of a company's business standards. While storing data in the native currency or a preferred currency is feasible for a data warehouse, I strongly encourage understanding the company's business policy.
