BACKGROUND: Dodson Group is a 100-year-old property and casualty insurance company based in Kansas City, Missouri. Dodson Group specializes in workers' compensation insurance and related products and services.

PLATFORMS: Windows NT, IBM AIX, DB2.

PROBLEM SOLVED: Dodson Group was feeling the pressure of information overload. Given the volume and complexity of the data, information retrieval was very cumbersome and unmanageable. This issue had a direct impact on the quality of our reports. For example, our production reports would not balance with our sales reports, resulting in subjective and inconsistent bonuses. We required a single collection point for vital historical and current data so we could perform complex analysis and receive accurate answers.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: Thazar Business Intelligence Suite has been extremely helpful to Dodson Group. The warehouse collects information pertinent to our decision-making needs. We no longer have to question the integrity of our data. Information is delivered more quickly, more completely and with a higher level of quality than was possible in the past. The Business Intelligence Suite has given our analysts the ability to make decisions at a strategic level. Additionally, the flexibility and functionality of the suite has allowed our people to access information directly at their desk, allowing our information technology department to focus on other IT projects. The ability to respond effectively improves the quality of service we provide to our customers which, in turn, improves the company's bottom line.

STRENGTHS: Thazar Solutions uses predefined data models and templates created specifically for the insurance industry. The foundation of our warehouse was very important to us. Thazar Solutions' technical architecture is flexible, scalable and robust. Additionally, their development and implementation staff has a thorough knowledge of the insurance industry. When implementing a project of this scope, you must feel confident the implementation staff understands the requirements of your industry. The Thazar Solutions staff has also been helpful with their ongoing support and knowledge transfer.

WEAKNESSES: As one of their first customers, the base warehouse was relatively new. Since then, they have improved their ETL functions. Furthermore, Thazar Solutions' Suite did not contain all the decision support tools we required. We have incorporated additional vendors' front-end tools to round out our decision-making needs.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Thazar Solutions was chosen for their vertical focus on the insurance industry. Other horizontal vendors and consultants required a level of training to understand our business, which would have extended our implementation effort and would have affected our end product.

DELIVERABLES: Our end users have been very pleased with the output from our warehouse. The multitude of balancing problems we had in the past are gone. We are now accurately tracking our production and can compare actual results versus sales goals at various levels. We are also yielding valuable information for pricing decisions, risk analysis and profitability analysis. Additionally, timely information can be delivered for marketing purposes such as cross-selling, instituting niche markets and expanding our geographic reach. Dodson Group is leveraging the data warehouse to perform decision making at a strategic level. The insurance industry has become a very competitive market, and we feel our data warehouse has served us well in helping us maintain our status in the workers' compensation arena.

VENDOR SUPPORT: Our maintenance agreement provides support and upgrades as needed. Thazar Solutions is able to address issues in a professional and timely manner and has proved to be a reliable partner.

DOCUMENTATION: Thazar Solutions provided written documentation that is complete and fulfilled our needs.
