BACKGROUND: Deutsche Bank is the second largest bank in Europe. The century-old German bank has more than 2,200 offices in more than 50 countries and is tailoring its services to reflect consolidation in the European market and streamlining bureaucracy to remain competitive. Deutsche Bank's planned $10 billion acquisition of U.S.-based Bankers Trust would make it the world's largest bank.

PLATFORMS: Constellar Hub supports the leading UNIX and Windows platforms. Deutsche Bank systems include AIX and NT systems, but data is collected from and delivered to mainframe systems as well.

PROBLEM SOLVED: Deutsche Bank has successfully implemented a prototype system based on Constellar technology to trap and transform data from heterogeneous platforms (host, UNIX, PC) with different structures and formats into a standardized database without manual intervention. The data includes critical information for risk and performance management. This technology is especially valuable for branch figure consolidation within multinational organizations and data collection from various front-office systems in heterogeneous system environments. While the data is en route between systems, Constellar Hub performs sophisticated, rules-based transformations to reconcile the differences in financial products before delivering the consolidated data to a central data warehouse where the information can be easily accessed via an intranet.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: Constellar Hub is a packaged enterprise application integration (EAI) solution that enables users to rapidly build and deploy interfaces in order to reduce the time frames, costs and risks of implementing new systems and integrating applications, whether those applications are legacy, custom, ERP or data warehouses. Because all data flows through the Hub and all meta data is maintained in the Hub, Constellar provides a maintainable, scalable environment for managing interfaces, including the ability to schedule, monitor, reconcile and audit data transformation and movement between enterprise applications. Critical to Deutsche Bank is Constellar Hub's ability to move large volumes of data during tight batch windows, to centrally manage and control all data flows and to perform complex transformations ensuring that data is not just moved, but also cleansed, enriched and validated to protect the integrity of the data used for business analysis.

STRENGTHS: At Deutsche Bank, there are many key advantages of using Constellar: 1) The definition of a data feed as a meta data schema and a set of business rules frees the developer from the tedious details of reading and writing data in files and tables and ensures that these details are treated in a standardized fashion across the enterprise; 2) A source or target is only modeled once the "hub" architecture substantially reduces the number of point-to-point connections which enables changes to be made quickly and interfaces to be managed centrally; 3) Constellar Hub achieves greater transparency and maintainability of data feeds than hand-coded programs and scripts that have typically been used in the past; 4) Parallel processing can be switched on in the tool to leverage the parallel capabilities of the hardware; 5) Host connectivity makes it possible to read or write information on host DB2.

WEAKNESSES: Because Constellar Hub is a complex technology, new skills had to be learned to ensure a successful deployment.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Deutsche Bank selected Constellar Hub for its unique ability to centrally create and manage complex interfaces for data transfer between widely disparate IT systems. Capabilities that made Constellar stand out from the competition include modeling of data sources and targets, definition of "transactions" as a source, a target and a set of business rules for easy mapping, scheduled execution of data transactions and automatic generation of documentation for interfaces and transformations.

DELIVERABLES: By combining Constellar Hub technology, internal and external skills, and standard project methodology, Deutsche Bank has created a solid EAI infrastructure to support its growing operations in an increasingly competitive global environment.

VENDOR SUPPORT: Constellar offers several support programs, including worldwide 24x7 support options, as well as consulting and training services. All support programs include unlimited access to Constellar's team of experienced support engineers via phone, fax, e-mail and the Web.

DOCUMENTATION: Constellar's documentation is comprehensive and includes "Quick Start" guides on the many product capabilities and features.
