Dell and VMware announced the availability of the Dell Cloud based on VMware vCloud Datacenter Services, an offering designed to provide a multi-tenant environment for running virtual systems.
Dell says it’s one of the first providers authorized to provide VMware vCloud Datacenter Services for enterprise-class public, private and hybrid clouds.
The announcement is the first public and hybrid cloud offering by Dell. The company will also offer consulting, application and infrastructure services to help companies transform their legacy IT environments and integrate cloud services effectively.
Dell and VMware will provide infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) offerings for end customer, hosting and outsourcing firms, system integrators and service providers.
To address the security concerns customers have with cloud implementations, Dell is providing a multi-layer enterprise security solution that protects data center infrastructures through the management and monitoring of network firewalls, Web application firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems and vulnerability scanning.
Dell Cloud with VMware vCloud Datacenter Services includes several options, including a public cloud service hosted in a secure Dell data center, a private cloud that Dell builds at either the customer’s data center or Dell data centers, or a hybrid cloud.
Dell says the new cloud offering is based on open standards and interoperable technologies that enable seamless portability of workloads between public and private clouds. It is now offering the service to beta customers, with general availability in the U.S. planned for the fourth quarter of this year.
"Our customer surveys show data security and privacy still top the list of concerns about implementing cloud services, and Dell's new cloud is designed to address those concerns,” Gard Little, research director at IDC, said in a statement.
“This offering should allow Dell to address surveyed customers' second greatest concern, which is migrating systems with on-premise data or applications to the cloud," Little said.
