January 4, 2011 – Seeking to enhance the security component of its IT as a Service portfolio, Dell announced a definitive agreement to buy Atlanta company SecureWorks.

SecureWorks offers security management applications, intrusion prevention services, on-call expert threat analysis, and visibility of broad, emerging risks across its nearly 3,000 clients, according to a news release on the proposed deal. Founded in 1999, SecureWorks has had a partnership delivering solutions using Dell technology since 2005.

Dell stated that the flexibility and scope of SecureWorks’ managed security services platform enables an expansion of its enterprise-class and small-to-medium sized business solutions for IT as a Service.

Peter Altabef, Dell Services president, said in a news release that SecureWorks experts and solutions would “immediately enhance” his company’s security offerings in an increasingly hostile marketplace.

“The frequency and sophistication of attacks on technology infrastructure and malicious attempts to access data, requires reliable, capable and innovative information security,” Altabef said.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed and are subject to customary approvals, according to a news release.
