REVIEWER: Mike Hall, director, Purchased Data Acquisition and Analysis, Experian.

BACKGROUND: Experian is a global leader in providing information and analytical services to help organizations and consumers manage the risks and rewards of commercial and financial decisions. Combining its unique information tools and deep understanding of individuals, markets and economies, Experian partners with organizations around the world to establish and strengthen customer relationships. Experian employs approximately 15,500 people in 38 countries worldwide, and its North American operational headquarters is in Costa Mesa, California.

PLATFORMS: Microsoft Windows XP and Solaris.

PROBLEM SOLVED: Experian needed a way to quickly and easily evaluate the quality and value prospective of potential new data sources for the consumer credit bureau. By implementing DataFlux dfPower Studio and DataFlux Integration Server, we were able to quickly evaluate data sources on an ad hoc basis. DataFlux allows us the flexibility to work in a number of different formats and has the data profiling ability for quick evaluation.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: We have had a tremendously successful experience with DataFlux. The tools are reliable, flexible and scalable. dfPower Studio is a design environment for data quality and data integration tasks, providing a single platform for common data analysis and improvement functionality. The DataFlux Integration Server allows users to extend business rules for data quality and data integration throughout the IT environment. Users may visually design data quality workflows using dfPower Studio and then replicate those same business rules across the enterprise using DataFlux Integration Server.

STRENGTHS: As mentioned, the DataFlux technology is flexible. Moreover, the quality of the metrics and the profiling capabilities that are inherent in the system are truly revolutionary. There is a very limited amount of custom design required.

WEAKNESSES: Our biggest complaint - and we don’t believe this to be DataFlux specific - is the inability to connect to mainframe data sets.

SELECTION CRITERIA: DataFlux was easy to use as a standalone process. We didn’t need to integrate the technology with our mainframe applications. Moreover, the company provides outstanding customer support.

DELIVERABLES: It is essential that we have a tool that quickly and clearly provides us with the data we need to run our business efficiently. The profiling tool is totally integrated from a reporting perspective and gives a complete evaluation of the data source as well as frequency counts that drill down into the data sets - very powerful for what we do.

VENDOR SUPPORT: Vendor support from DataFlux has been key, both pre- and post-implementation. They provided onsite comprehensive training before we started the implementation process. Since implementation, they walked us through every upgrade and install. They are hands-on and readily available.

DOCUMENTATION: The documentation is easy to understand and embedded with software that makes it easy to use - the best of both worlds.
