If the analysts are to be believed, then data warehousing and business intelligence officers won’t always just be reporting to the chief information officer. Instead, as corporations and information technology enterprises move toward a more networked environment, their next boss might be the chief monitoring officer.

"By monitoring business processes and metrics in real time, this person (the chief monitoring officer) will have their finger on pulse of the enterprise," says Ken McGee, a vice president and research fellow with Gartner Group. "These are the people that will find the problem and solve the problem before they ever arise."
