The DAMA Presidents Council took advantage of their presence at the Orlando DAMA Conference to share ideas. Twenty members of global chapters brainstormed issues. The overall plan was to elicit ideas from the presidents in the morning and present those findings to the DAMA International (DAMA-I) board for feedback. In previous years, the presidents took more of a listening role as the board reported their direction and strategy. This year, I decided to have the chapter presidents meet alone for a few hours to allow for freedom of expression and free flow of ideas.

Professional facilitator and DAMA member Shelley Lieberman moderated the session. Her three-prong strategy was to define the chapter goals, brainstorm issues and formulate questions and suggestions. The Presidents Council came up with the following major issues and recommendations:

Vendor Relations: Chapters need to clarify their relationships with vendors and understand their role. Should we be vendor independent?

Chapter Growth: Chapters need to draw more workers with a strong spirit of volunteerism. This can be supported by notifying a member's business manager about the value he/she adds to DAMA. Chapters should align their mission statement with DAMA-I's and build on the strategic and tactical thinking of members.

Chapter Membership: How can we increase membership? What can DAMA-I offer to support that effort? We should consider standardizing member types.

Financing: We need to understand what benefits DAMA-I offers in order to entice new membership. Should we be member-driven or event-driven in our efforts to increase revenue?

Speaker Tours: We should take advantage of speakers' services offered by DAMA-I. This means that the speakers should be listed clearly with information concerning their latest engagements.

Finally, the presidents voted on an action plan to meet more than once a year. Their next event will be a conference call prior to the Wilshire Conference in November. Then, there will be a face-to-face meeting for those attending the November Wilshire Conference. Finally, they will meet again next May at the Los Angeles Conference. Future meetings will be more focused, with one topic per meeting.
