Executive Summary The New Piper Aircraft recently moved from a 25 year-old legacy transaction processing system to a fully integrated ERP system. As part of the implementation, New Piper decision makers needed fast, accurate access to mission critical data. Powerful, easy to use reporting and analysis were also required - all with thin, zero administration Web clients. With a Brio-based system New Piper decision makers easily produce timely, relevant reports that provide them with the ability to optimize business performance. The Situation The New Piper Aircraft, Inc. with nearly 1,600 employees, builds the world's broadest line of general aviation aircraft for business, flight training and personal use. Products range from a four-seater trainer aircraft selling for less than $200,000 to the flagship Meridian - a six-seater turbo prop powered aircraft selling for close to $1.6 million. All aircraft are both designed and manufactured in a single, one million square foot facility in Vero Beach, Florida. With demand for general aviation equipment growing rapidly since the late 1990's, New Piper's major business challenge has been to continually increase production capacity to meet demand.

The Need New Piper's legacy transaction system met the company's basic needs, but it wasn't ideal for reporting or integrating company wide activities. Its demise was hastened by the advent of the "year 2000 bug", and a new, fully-integrated ERP system was installed in 1999. The company quickly found that the new ERP system's standard reports weren't meeting user needs, and within a short time the reporting backlog had grown to an unmanageable level. The company sought a solution allowing end users to perform ad hoc queries and produce their own reports, thus eliminating their dependency on IT.
