The American Red Cross will use Courion’s Access Risk Management Suite, an identity and access management system, to streamline operations as part of an organization-wide move to the Microsoft Office 365 cloud computing platform, according to Courion.

The organization will use the Access Risk Management Suite to provision Office 365 e-mail for full-time employees, contract workers and volunteers. Email is a key communication tool for the Red Cross as it organizes disaster response, provides much of the nation’s blood supply, teaches lifesaving skills and provides international humanitarian aid.

By leveraging a cloud-based e-mail application, the Red Cross will streamline operations and reduce system costs and maintenance, Courion says. Office 365 will allow the organization to distill a variety of e-mail addresses at chapter offices to create a single address for each worker. When the project is complete, the Red Cross will have a single global communication system for reaching staff and affiliates quickly.

“The national organization and the chapters built out their IT infrastructures and added users, growing our e-mail systems independently, which created a lack of consistency across the organization,” Suzanne Hall, chief information security officer at American Red Cross, said in a statement. “As we move from a franchise model to a regional chapter model, it’s important everyone is operating on the same platform.”

The Courion Access Risk Management Suite will enable the organization to improve security and reduce risk by managing user access to a single e-mail platform, Hall said. The suite integrates key identity and access management functions such as identity and access governance, user provisioning and password management. It’s available as on-premise software or as a software-as-a-service offering called Courion Live.
