Question: I have the following requirement in my data warehouse project: We need to take snapshot of the existing data in the DW at regular intervals (selected dynamically by the user). On the top of this snapshot data, the users should be able to do ad hoc and what-if analysis - by changing the underlying data for these snapshot tables. Now I want to know the best design and best practices to make this happen. I am using Oracle 10g and BO X R2. I need to use the same BO universe on the snapshot database also (table structures are assumed to be same).
Chuck Kelley's Answer: Absolutely NO changes of data in the warehouse. If you want to move the data to a specific data mart (loosely defined) and create some tables for them to change to do their analysis then OK. I would never allow them to change my base tables.
