REVIEWER: Alpana Prasad, assistant director, CLS Division of Wolters Kluwer.
BACKGROUND: CT Corporation, a Wolters Kluwer company, pioneered the corporate legal services industry more than 100 years ago. Today, CT Corporation is leading the industry in developing a powerful suite of integrated workflow tools and services to help corporate legal departments and law firms realize meaningful efficiencies and increased effectiveness. These solutions are corporate governance, including corporate records management and SEC compliance; corporate compliance, such as business entity and UCC compliance filings; statutory representation; and litigation management, including matter management and e-billing. The Corporate Legal Services (CLS) IT department is responsible for engaging in and managing multiple IT projects worldwide. Detailed time and invoice records are logged and tracked by IT consultants and staff across all projects.
PLATFORMS: PC - Microsoft Windows.
PROBLEM SOLVED: The organization generates substantial quantities of project management data across projects worldwide. The key challenge was to provide an analytical application to end users that enabled them to view different perspectives of the data. This included actual spend on a project at any point in time, resource allocation - by project, by location (on-site versus offshore), by role, etc.
PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: Project data is collected using Oracle, then transformed and loaded into a Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services data warehouse (online analytical processing [OLAP] cube). Tableau Professional Version 2.0 is used to analyze this data. Visual displays are created from the analyses.
STRENGTHS: The visualization features of Tableau enabled the company to digest the information in many complex perspectives. The intuitive user interface helped the company sharpen our analysis while delivering quick and incremental results. The product is easy to deploy and use.
WEAKNESSES: A Web version of Tableau is not available. This would greatly facilitate wider organizational deployment. Oracle queries are slow. How to display percentages and groups when generating reports using a SQL Analysis cube is not intuitive. (Note: This functionality is available when generating Tableau reports directly from the table.)
SELECTION CRITERIA: The primary evaluation criteria for the new application were: 1) it had to be very user-friendly and intuitive, 2) it had to allow ad hoc queries by the end user to support multidimensional analysis, 3) it had to have powerful visual analysis features, and 4) it had to be deployed quickly without servers or IT support.
DELIVERABLES: Tableau Professional Version 2.0 delivers reports and visual displays.
VENDOR SUPPORT: Vendor support has been excellent. Tableau was very responsive and flexible to our needs. They worked closely with us through deployment and training of resources on the product.
DOCUMENTATION: The documentation and product demonstrations are excellent.
