Cloud integration is among the key business goals that are driving the growing need for application programming interface programs, with 67.6 percent of the respondents citing that as a driver, according to Layer 7, a unit of CA Technologies.

Other business goals driving the need for API programs include mobility programs (72 percent), partner connectivity (69 percent), enabling internal developers (67 percent), and fostering external developer ecosystems (55 percent).

More than 43 percent of the 140 enterprises surveyed by Layer 7 Technologies in May 2013 have an API program in place, and 27 percent plan to launch a program within the next year.

“Enterprises are increasingly recognizing APIs as a cornerstone of the modern open hybrid enterprise,” Dimitri Sirota, senior vice president, security at CA Technologies and co-founder of Layer 7 said in a statement. “For an organization to be successful, it must have a strategy to deploy and manage the APIs that will enable it to secure and leverage data, empower a mobilized workforce and engage with the developers driving the app economy.”

Survey respondents indicated that mobile performance optimization, developer enablement and data analytics were the three most important features needed in an API management solution, and nearly half of those surveyed said data security and privacy were their biggest security considerations.

Despite the steady growth of cloud-based solutions, more than half (55 percent) of the enterprises still prefer an on-premise solution, while hybrid cloud deployments are also popular (43 percent).
