December 17, 2010 – Citrix Systems Inc. said Friday it plans to expand its SaaS business presence with the purchase of privately held German vendor Netviewer AG.

Founded in 2001, Netviewer specializes in collaboration solutions and has more than 18,000 customers, according to its website. Officials for California-based Citrix stated that the acquisition will enable it to address the surge in virtualization, particularly in Europe.

“SaaS-based collaboration and IT services have been key to our growth story. We believe there is even more opportunity ahead as the global market matures and customers look for a strong, experienced partner,” said Brett Caine, Citrix online services division senior vice president.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Netviewer and its more than 220 employees will be folded into the Citrix online services division, according to a Citrix news release, and Citrix stated it would keep Netviewer’s German offices as a hub.

Citrix made additional moves in the cloud marketplace earlier this year with the purchase of software virtualization firm VMLogix.
