Cisco announced it has expanded its data center product and services portfolio, with the introduction of new networking and security capabilities and the addition of a blade server.
The company said the additions mark an evolution of its Data Center 3.0 strategy, and is aimed at supporting new business models such as desktop virtualization and public or private clouds.
Highlights of the announcement include a Cisco Virtual Security Gateway (VSG), a virtual appliance designed to provide security policies at the virtual machine level. The appliance addresses security and compliance requirements for virtualized data center and multi-tenant cloud environments.
Cisco also introduced a vWAAS (Virtual Wide Area Application Services) offering, a cloud-ready WAN optimization service to speed up application performance in virtualized environments.
Cisco also took the wraps off a new Nexus 5548 switch, which it says has double the port density of other Nexus 5000 switches and has 40% less power consumption for improved cost effectiveness.
Cisco also added a new blade server to its Unified Computing System (UCS) portfolio, the B230 M1 Blade Server, which is based on the Intel Xeon 6500/7500 processor series. The new blade server is targeted at transaction-intensive workloads, server virtualization and desktop virtualization.
A final piece of the announcement is a new suite of professional and technical services, including a new Cisco Desktop Virtualization Service, for customers looking to build and support a virtual desktop infrastructure.
“With over 1,700 customers since Cisco began shipping the Unified Computing System a year ago, we continue to deliver innovation and one of the industry’s broadest portfolios of options,” Soni Jiandani, Cisco vice president of server access and virtualization, said in a statement.
