Q:

Can you point me to articles discussing the importance of front-end tools/applications and the purpose they have in business? I have looked at a number of vendor papers on tools but my boss doesn't want a vendor review but rather an explanation on why front-end tools or applications are used in business.

A:

Joyce Bischoff’s Answer: Front-end tools provide the user with the software necessary for accessing and analyzing the data in a data warehouse. They usually allow the users to submit ad hoc queries or predetermined queries and reports. Custom designed front ends may also be created to access the data in a way that is specific to a set of user requirements. Without a front-end tool or application, there is no way to access the data in a warehouse. Les Barbusinski’s Answer: Here are a couple What Decision Support Tools are Used For by Larry Greenfield (www.dwinfocenter.org/whatfor.html) and OLAP Applications by Nigel Pendse (www.olapreport.com/Applications.htm).
