Q:

Can you offer information on any resources that discuss on-site data warehousing vs. off-site storage of the data warehouse? My goal is to put together a cost comparison of the two options (on-site vs. off-site). Do you have any advice on where to look or where to begin?

A:

Sid Adelman's Answer: There are a few questions that come to mind:

  1. Why are you doing this?
  2. How are the roles and responsibilities divided? Who is doing what?
  3. Who is responsible for backup and recovery? What service level agreements will you have for availability?
  4. Who is responsible for performance? What service level agreements will you have for performance?
  5. How responsive will the outsourcer be to requests, changes, response to problems, etc.

Be sure to talk with their existing customers and find out just how well this is working for them and what kinds of problems they have. This would include how much of their time is taken dealing with the outsourcer and what the outsourcer's track record has been for availability and performance and response to problems and requests.
