BACKGROUND: Ernest & Julio Gallo is the world's largest winery. The business which began in the 1930s is still a privately held, family-run business.

PLATFORMS: We are currently running Brio's client/server and Web-based products on Windows 95 and NT 4.0 machines. Broadcast Server is running on Windows NT server platform on a Compaq Professional Workstation 5000 and running Windows NT Workstation on a Compaq Deskpro 4000. OnDemand Server is on the same Compaq Professional Workstation 5000 as the Broadcast Server on Windows NT 4.0 Server.

PROBLEM SOLVED: With a complex heterogeneous, multitier product distribution system generating data feeds from winery, distributor and retail supply chain elements, the Gallo Winery had a clear business need to turn that data into useable business information. Having data electronically available offered management a rich analytical environment to assess the business by geography, channel of distribution and product portfolio. A variety of external data was used to enrich the winery's supply chain detail such as demographics and syndicated data sources. This decision support environment is fundamental to fact-based decision making and helps maintain the Gallo Winery's position as a global market leader.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: The Brio Enterprise Suite consists of BrioQuery Designer, BrioQuery Explorer, Brio.Insight, Broadcast Server and OnDemand Server and provides access to information collected from various winery, distributor and retail supply chain elements. Users access data from these points using preformatted documents/reports as well as ad hoc/undefined user queries delivered via desktop, e-mail or Intranet.

STRENGTHS: Gallo chose Brio as our corporate standard because we believe the products offer features that suit our fast-paced business. EIS capabilities allow point-and-click access to reports and real-time content refreshing via the Web and the Adaptive Reporting technology of the OnDemand Server. With 6.0's new JavaScript capabilities, we'll be able to guide novice information consumers through point-and-click reports. The new ability to embed query objects, resulting in the inclusion of multiple results sets within a single report, transforms the scope of our Brio implementation. What's more, new functionality in 6.0 gives us the ability to roll up multiple results sets from multidimensional and relational sources into a single report that extends Brio's reach.

WEAKNESSES: In the past, Brio's report writing capabilities have been very solid, but we wanted more functionality. Working with Brio's product development team has helped lead to enhancements in Brio's new enterprise reporting capabilities.

SELECTION CRITERIA: We chose Brio based on its ease of use, EIS and analytical capabilities. In our system, we find the products to be easily administered, allowing our data to be distributed via the Web and e-mail to geographically disparate parts of our organization. The Brio products in our system integrate a spectrum of query, reporting and analysis functionality into a single product.

DELIVERABLES: The Brio products installed at Gallo provide client/server and Web-based query, reporting and analysis capabilities to more than 300 business and IT users in domestic and international offices. Sales and marketing perform a variety of brand/product reporting and analyses to assess the effects of market dynamics, the influence of demographic factors and the impact of competitive activities.

VENDOR SUPPORT: Brio has demonstrated to Gallo consistently and over time that they are committed to a partnership in enhancing the features and functionality of the products installed at Gallo.

DOCUMENTATION: We have not had to rely on Brio documentation or on-line help in more than a few instances. From end user tools to server products, we have found the technologies to be easily installed and supported in our installation.
