August 8, 2012 – BMC plans to acquire application automation and release software provider Varalogix, the second buy into the development and operations, or DevOps, space in less than a year.
Varalogix’s signature software, Q, provides Web application deployment and configuration for .NET and Java. BMC stated it will integrate Varalogix functionality into its forthcoming BMC Release Lifecycle Management offering, which will be part of its application management portfolio. Jody Hunt, BMC lead solution manager, DevOps, says BMC is answering customer calls for increased visibility and agility with a slew of new enterprise Web and on-demand applications.
It was the second acquisition in the DevOps space in less than a year for BMC, after October 2011’s buyout of Austin-based application delivery and release software provider StreamStep.
Gartner Research VP Jim Duggan pointed to the deals for Varalogix and StreamStep as part of the evolution of the DevOps space in terms of industry development and release practices as well as the top layers of the enterprise cloud.
“This particularly gives BMC more capability to automate the release and deployments of applications, as opposed to infrastructure, as well as expand their capabilities in some environments, notably .NET,” Duggan says. “All of the traditional system management vendors – BMC, CA, HP, IBM – have work to do in this space. Many of these capabilities that are deployed now are built on open source or offerings from small vendors.”
Privately-held Varalogix is based in Austin, Texas, and was founded by engineers at Build Forge, which was acquired by IBM in 2006. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
