As business service management (BSM) continues to move into the IT mainstream, BMC Software launched its second generation BMC Atrium Configuration Management Database (CMDB) and BMC Automated Discovery solutions as part of its expanded BSM foundation technologies that enable customers executing on BSM to manage their IT from a rigorous business perspective. The cornerstone of the company's BSM foundation technologies, BMC Atrium CMDB 2.0 unifies the sharing of IT configuration and business priority information. BMC Automated Discovery works in partnership with BMC Atrium CMDB 2.0 to model all IT-supporting elements - from technology to business processes to people - and delivers a single, unified, business-relevant view into the IT environment. Taken together, these foundation technologies deliver a level of insight into how IT supports the business that is not available from any other vendor. As a result, customers are able to make more educated and calculated IT decisions in support of business goals, which is the essence of BSM.
The new BMC Atrium CMDB 2.0 is engineered from the ground up to be light-weight, fault-tolerant, robust, and easy to implement and use. It extends the company's analyst-recognized BSM leadership with CMDB innovations that include much deeper levels of integration, an updated architecture, improved federation capabilities, definitive software library (DSL) deployment, graphical data views for all applications, and improved data reconciliation. Building on the first generation BMC Atrium CMDB released in early 2005, the second generation was developed with input from hundreds of customers and includes a set of innovative, shared technologies that link together - or federate - disparate views of the IT infrastructure while providing a shared understanding of business priorities.
According to Forrester Research, "a true CMDB is created by using two key types of input -IT asset management data and application mapping auto-discovery data." The addition of Identity Discovery, Discovery for Business Processes, and Discovery for Storage to BMC's existing discovery products provides customers with the broadest and deepest view into the IT infrastructure and relationships, and to date, is unparalleled in the industry. Data and models discovered are brought into the federated CMDB environment, so they can be used in the most effective matter to support BSM and ITIL processes. The company's imminent release of Discovery for Mainframes, due this fall, will further extend its foundation technologies.
Underpinned by the consistent data model of BMC Atrium CMDB 2.0, the level of integration produced by BMC's BSM solutions translates directly into superlative accuracy and consistency. Performance is optimized, redundancies are reduced, and operational costs - which are the bulk of any IT budget - are slashed.
