Orlando - SAP this week announced general availability of the business intelligence (BI) accelerator, a rack-type appliance aimed at improving the speed of analyzing business information. The unit is said to process up to 200 times faster than other tools built for SAP and "crunches through terabytes of data in seconds," according to the company. The announcement came at SAP's combined user group and Sapphire annual conference in Orlando.

BI accelerator comes pre-installed on 64-bit Xeon processor-based blade servers from IBM and HP. Intel and SAP worked together to develop the engine, which they call a new breed of process-embedded analytical application that combines transactional and analytical capabilities into a single process.

"We think this is super-exciting, ... the ability to take large collections of data, our largest data warehouses and put them [through] a stabilizing experience, a box essentially," said ShaiAgassi executive board member, SAP. BI accelerator "can take multiple billions of records, allow people to slice them and navigate through them in sub-seconds, giving you a Google like experience on large collections of data."

SAP says the product is particularly valuable to organizations managing large volumes of data, where BI accelerator can maximize existing investments and improve productivity. Agassi said about 30 customers have been using the product and have reported query times between 20 and 200 times faster than in the past. Several of these users were relating their experience at the Sapphire conference.
