BACKGROUND: BEA Systems, Inc. develops, deploys, manages and integrates distributed middleware software solutions for enterprise-level, mission-critical applications. BEA is a market leader in enterprise middleware solutions for Global 5000 companies. The company's technologies create and manage large-scale applications that support fundamental business processes, such as airline reservations, credit card processing and customer billing across distributed computing environments such as the Web, client/server systems and mainframe environments all within a single information technology infrastructure.

PLATFORMS: BEA Systems, Inc. uses the Solaris 7 operating system running on a Sun server system to power Iluminar 2.0 and OpenWrap.

PROBLEM SOLVED: BEA is geographically distributed worldwide and required a solution that would allow users to share information quickly and easily, regardless of the time or location, to increase communications and collaboration and enhance productivity. In addition, the solution needed to unify content, personalize its use, globally control and administer it, and measure and track its usage.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: Iluminar 2.0 with its three components the Iluminar Folder, the Iluminar Server and the Iluminar Administration Console was chosen by BEA to provide a platform, location and application-independent framework that unifies business content with its associated meta data. This marriage provides context to content. The information is then used to create and populate a repository of stored data. The foundation for Iluminar 2.0, Verano's patent- pending OpenWrap technology, allows BEA to automatically or manually capture and add meta data to describe information, control access and behavior, and audit information use, thereby ensuring delivery of the right information to the right user at the right time regardless of location or native application. In addition, BEA uses Iluminar 2.0's easy drag-and-drop interface to offer customized reporting according to need and group and empowers end users and content owners by removing the need for direct intervention from technical Web masters to publish any business content. In the future, BEA plans to use Iluminar 2.0 to provide a Web-based form for users to publish information directly to the repository.

STRENGTHS: Iluminar 2.0 with OpenWrap provides BEA with a secure, easy-to-use method for publishing and retrieving information; utilizes meta data to describe information, control access and behavior; and includes an advanced searching capability.

WEAKNESSES: BEA is eagerly anticipating the ability to provide a Web-based interface to publish information eliminating the need for client-side applications.

SELECTION CRITERIA: BEA selected Verano's Iluminar 2.0 with OpenWrap because it includes tight integration with the search engine, provides advanced searching capabilities and utilizes meta data to describe information and control access and behavior. Iluminar 2.0 also includes an easy-to-use drag-and-drop interface that removes the need for direct intervention from technical Web masters to publish any business content.

DELIVERABLES: BEA used Iluminar 2.0 with OpenWrap to create a repository of stored data for easy search and retrieval by authorized users at any time and from anywhere, worldwide. In addition, Iluminar 2.0 allows BEA Systems to create custom reports for a wide range of functional groups and departments within the company.

VENDOR SUPPORT: Verano's product support during pre- and post-implementation was excellent Verano was very responsive. The vendor spent a lot of time listening to BEA, analyzing the business problem and then communicating conclusions and recommendations. Based on their findings, Verano then designed a solution that would not only meet BEA's current information delivery requirements but includes the flexibility to accommodate future growth.

DOCUMENTATION: The documentation was complete and easy to understand and was supplemented with a four-hour training session which, although helpful, was not essential to deploying and using the application.
