Avnet and IBM have unveiled a turn-key Hadoop solution -- hardware, software and support -- designed for on-premises big data deployments. It's the first of multiple Hadoop bundles that Avnet apparently intends to promote.
The platform -- dubbed Avnet Enabled Hadoop -- combines enterprise-class servers, storage, network, OS and Hadoop software into an integrated, validated, optimized and tested package, Avnet asserts. The initial Avnet offering features IBM BigInsights -- big blue's version of the Hadoop open source platform.
One Solution, One Contact
While Hadoop deployments can be complex, Avnet is promising a simplified customer experience. The offering includes a single point of contact for procurement, maintenance and support for the entire lifecycle of hardware, OS and software updates, Avnet stated. Moreover, customers will receive twice-per-year operating system health checks and IBM BigInsights software updates, Avnet said.
It's a safe bet Avnet is exploring whether to expand its Avnet Enabled Hadoop offerings to include components from Cisco Systems, HP and Oracle. Indeed, Avnet has existing partnerships with each of those enterprise companies in other areas, Information Management notes.
Market Challenges, Opportunities
The first Avnet Enabled Hadoop offering arrives at an opportune time. Generally speaking, Hadoop has emerged as a key building block for big data deployments. But some customers are struggling to piece various hardware and software together for their big data deployments. Others are turning to Hadoop cloud services to start or simplify their big data journeys.
Still, on-premises deployments could gain more momentum as certified Hadoop professionals flood the market, and integrated bundles from Avnet and others go mainstream.
