May 14, 2012 – Convergence of IT infrastructure under cloud, mobile and social implementations positions organizations for innovation and enterprise enablement, though “ideal” access to this type of infrastructure is still in the distance for most enterprises, according to a report from Aberdeen Group.

The research firm recently released findings and suggestions on how a unified model of the three areas, which Aberdeen dubs “SoMoClo,” can position IT as “a facilitator of the future of the business.” The crux of the report, “SoMoClo Business Transformation: From Challenge to Opportunity,” starts with cloud computing at the core of enterprise data, with mobile BI-enabled devices connecting users through social and collaborative applications.

Aberdeen stated that this isn’t the situation at the vast majority of enterprises. However, the report noted that enterprises engaged at some level of implementation of these integrated practices also had advantages in areas such as hiring models that are tied to innovation (33 percent, or 12 percent more than their less-connected counterparts) and implementation of agile methodologies (57 percent, or 18 percent more than their counterparts).

There is a growing chorus from the analyst community on these and other emerging tech areas toward an enterprise that works – and works well – outside of the office walls. Aberdeen Research Director Andrew Borg said that the SoMoClo concept at first seems like a perfect integration process, though it “is in fact an evolutionary process.” To this end, the concept also works well as a framework to gauge the importance or lagging areas of these three implementations, Borg wrote in the report.

“By comparing actual performance with the full SoMoClo performance potential, the organization can better learn to identify its strengths and address its relative weaknesses,” wrote Borg.

To maximize a strategy for the three interconnected implementations, Aberdeen outlined three main guidelines:

  • Deploy SoMoClo to the edge of enterprise environments so as to keep on top of in-house data needs such as IT compliance and risk management.
  • The CIO and IT should lead the charge for a converged environment to stay on top of their changing roles amid evolving infrastructure.
  • Work in conjunction with providers to nail down the best areas of growth among the three emerging disciplines.
