Q:

Our company designs databases to store campaign information. Most recently, we've been asked to keep data appends information (i.e., demographics) in our database. As the designer, I'm concerned because we pull this information from multiple sources. Are there any best practices around how to keep enhancement data for marketing campaigns?

A:

Clay Rehm's Answer: Since you are collecting data from multiple sources and storing them in one place, you will have to identify the business rules from each source. Start to collect these rules and compare and contrast them to each source. Once you have collected them all, integrate them into one set of rules that will work for the enterprise.

The best practice that is most important is efficient and thorough requirements gathering. Keep in mind you will not capture all the requirements and rules no matter how well you perform this task. Remember that your customers will not have all the answers at any one time so the rules will evolve for a while.
