Q: We are in the process of building the data mart using open source tools. Specifically on MYSQL, PHP and Apache server. In general, are open sources capable of handling huge volume of data? What about loading, access and performance of data?
Tom Haughey's Answer:
In my experience, the open source tools have scalability, performance and concurrency issues on really large databases and warehouses. They are appropriate for smaller DWs or for a prototype version of a larger warehouse.
Chuck Kelley's Answer:
I will address MySQL. I do not think that MySQL is ready for large volumes of data, although version 5 is showing promise. Keep watching... this may change soon!
