BACKGROUND: Advanced Navigation and Positioning Corporation (ANPC) provides airspace safety and efficiency, and capacity to users of aviation through state-of-the-art tracking and guidance. ANPC's technology uniquely combines the critical functions of terminal surveillance and precision approach guidance and utilizes legacy airborne systems to provide safe all-weather airport access at minimal operator cost.

PROBLEM SOLVED: In 2000, ANPC underwent a management turnover. With a new team came new ambitions and a new challenge: coming up with a systematic way to consistently achieve goals. As a result, we invested much time and energy into a homegrown solution comprised of Excel spreadsheets and an Access database designed to help employees understand how their work contributes to the attainment of corporate goals. This new way of doing business, in which operational alignment was the ultimate goal, proved to be right on the money. More than ever, employees were knowingly choosing to do the right work because they had better insight into the goals. However, as the company began to grow, so did our need for a more robust technology solution to help us to continue to align resources with corporate goals. That is where PilotWorks, an operational performance management solution from Pilot Software, came in.
PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: So far, we have deployed three PilotWorks tabs: strategy, initiatives and scorecards. Each tab is designed with a specific user in mind. For example, the strategy tab is heavily used by the executive team, while scorecard and initiatives tend to be utilized more by middle management. Because of its user-specific design, the system is very approachable and easily integrated into all ANPC employees' workdays. In addition, because all stakeholders are using the same system, we now have a common repository of data and, therefore, a common language, so we are confident that the entire team is working toward the same goals. Pilot's methodical approach of increasing operational alignment to meet strategic goals has already helped the company with one of its objectives: to maximize profitability through customer satisfaction. Using PilotWorks, we were able to determine that insufficient spare equipment was affecting our customer satisfaction rate. With clear insight into the corporate strategy via the PilotWorks system, we knew that this issue had a direct impact on customer satisfaction, which in turn had a direct impact on revenue. We immediately deployed the necessary resources to address the root issue, and customer satisfaction has subsequently gone up. Pilot's unique approach, which starts with objectives rather than data, enabled us to limit the number of key performance indicators (KPIs) we were tracking. By taking this approach, we can avoid overwhelming the team with irrelevant reports or data. PilotWorks also enables ANPC's management team to conduct more structured planning sessions.
STRENGTHS: PilotWorks' ability to increase operational alignment is by far the product's biggest strength. Additionally, PilotWorks' forward-looking features, such as Pathways (part of the strategy tab), enable us to use the system as a planning tool, not just a way to access historical information.
WEAKNESSES: It would be nice to have a feature that could ensure success and that points out what can be done to speed up results.
SELECTION CRITERIA: Prior to Pilot, ANPC used an in-house product. We considered continuing to build the solution ourselves, but quickly realized that our time was better spent focusing on our core mission. Plus, as the organization grew, so did our related technology needs. Pilot was able to provide ANPC exactly what we were looking for: a scalable solution to align resources with strategy.
DELIVERABLES: Overall, PilotWorks has delivered many critical components necessary to build our business plan, including: visual and interactive strategy plans, pathways, initiative management to manage execution to strategy and reports to view historical information.
VENDOR SUPPORT: Vendor support is great. We always get a response within a day.
DOCUMENTATION: The product is so intuitive that we have not used the documentation.
