  • November 27 2006, 1:00am EST

Actuate Corporation announced new education offerings designed for developers and project managers to develop valuable skills in report development using BIRT. BIRT is a top level Eclipse Foundation project that addresses open source reporting and leverages a broad community of developers, commercial adopters, and interoperable top-level Eclipse projects. BIRT is built from the ground up for web applications, and designed to deliver ease of use and flexibility to report developers, who are typically not Java coders, as well as the functional power to meet the complex reporting needs of the most sophisticated real-world applications.

The courses, entitled "Working with BIRT Report Designer" and "Integrating and Deploying BIRT" are available immediately. Each boasts Actuate's comprehensive, thoroughly tested curriculum and enables students to work hands-on with Actuate software. Each student receives a workbook, which contains all of the exercises students will complete in class. Students also receive BIRT: A Field Guide to Reporting, published by Addison-Wesley. The classes will be presented as eLearning classes, available for self paced learning in the second half of 2007, and will be added to Actuate's impressive lineup of eLearning course offerings, including the recently launched "e.Report Designer Professional" and "e.Report Developer" offerings.

"Our BIRT curriculum is especially exciting because students are using BIRT software hands on, and picking up the latest collective innovations form the open source community," said Matt Kuckuk, vice president of e-services for Actuate. "The quality of this course offering ensures that our customers' will develop skills that are not available as a formal curriculum anywhere else."

These comprehensive courses deliver the foundational and curriculum for BIRT Students learn to build enterprise reports using BIRT Report Designer and are introduced to the design tools and basic reporting concepts. Students develop reports that range from simple listing reports to complex reports using grouping, report parameters, multiple master pages, hyperlinks, and a variety of data sources. The advanced curriculum teaches experienced developers to build and deploy applications rapidly using BIRT scripting and BIRT Java APIs in an Eclipse-based development environment.
