Conferences continue to be one of the major offerings of DAMA International (DAMA-I). The DAMA International Conference in Orlando last April, a joint conference with the Metadata Conference, was very successful in spite of the economy and world situation. An expanded and enhanced agenda drew nearly 1,000 people.

The DAMA International Europe Conference, a joint conference with the Information Quality Europe Conference and the Meta Data Europe Conference, will be held in London, October 27th through the 29th. This is Europe's premier data and information management event of the year. It also promises to be a very successful conference with an expanded agenda and increased attendance.

DAMA-I also has a track in the ER Conference that will be held in Chicago, October 13th through the 16th. This is a wonderful opportunity for industry and academic people to exchange thoughts and ideas about data management. Consult the DAMA-I Web page for more details on these events.

The successes with conferences, as well as successes in education, certifications and several other areas, show that DAMA-I is truly the premier organization for data management professionals worldwide. Our current primary emphasis is leading the data management discipline toward maturity. We are developing a strategic direction statement outlining the initiatives necessary to help us in this effort.

One of these initiatives is the establishment of permanent special interest groups (SIGs) to foster the exchange of ideas and practices to establish the best practices for data and information management. The tentative SIGs are data architecture, data modeling, data and information quality, data warehouses, data repositories, data stewardship and data management lexicon. The current vision is that SIGs will operate similar to the chapters, except they will have a topic of interest rather than a geographic area of interest, and they will be international in scope. They will also be vendor neutral like the chapters.

If you are interested in forming or leading one of these SIGs, or have any other questions or comments about DAMA International, please contact me at mhbrackett@aol.com.
