Dear DM Review Readers,

Years ago, TV commercials by a well- known chocolate company introduced a new metaphor into our modern vocabulary: "mixing your peanut butter with my chocolate" has come to mean creating a winning combination, in which both original ingredients are improved.

As president of DAMA International, I am very pleased to launch an equally desirable partnership, between DAMA (the Data Management Association) and DM Review. Like peanut butter and chocolate, this partnership is a natural fit of two great institutions in the field of information resource management: DM Review--the best and largest publication in our industry, and DAMA-- the best and largest professional association in our industry.

This partnership is intended to strengthen DAMA's ability to fulfill its mission. DM Review will serve as a two-way communication vehicle between practitioners in the field and DAMA, the professional association serving them. The purpose of this regular column is to provide information about resources, events and news that are of practical interest and use to DAMA members and data management professionals everywhere.

For those of you not familiar with DAMA, we are a vendor-independent, not-for-profit association of technical and business professionals dedicated to advancing the concepts and practices of information resource management. DAMA International's primary purpose is to promote the understanding, development and practice of managing information and data as a key enterprise asset.

Our mission is to help IRM practitioners become more knowledgeable and skilled in their profession by defining standards, sponsoring conferences, and establishing academic and professional education and certification programs.

DAMA provides venues for keeping IRM professionals connected with leaders in the field, with professional resources of all kinds and, most importantly, with each other. This is accomplished by thirty-four local chapters in seven nations, a member- at-large program and DAMA International, the central organization supporting them.

This year, DAMA holds its 10th annual International Symposium in Boston, Massachusetts, from March 18-20. This symposium will be co-located with the 2nd annual Meta Data Conference sponsored by TTI. Look on DAMA's Web site, www.dama.org, for more details about the symposium and information about the many other resources that DAMA offers its members.

DAMA thanks DM Review for its warm welcome. And DAMA welcomes you, the DM Review reader. This column is for you, so drop us a line at dama@dama.org and let us know what you'd like to see in the months ahead.
