November 2, 2011 – As the number of humans clicks past 7 billion, a new duo of analytics dashboards will provide context and visualizations into the information behind that population milestone.
SAP has unveiled two publicly accessible dashboards based on its business analytics offerings to funnel and visualize United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) information and trends. One dashboard provides a mapped snapshot of social, economic and demographic variables, and the other enables click-through visualizations and comparisons of trends. Both are built for laptop or mobile accessibility and are based on SAP’s Crystal Dashboard Design BI software.
In a news release, UN officials estimated that a fact-based breakdown and visualization from these numbers would until recently have been culled from spreadsheets of hundreds of government agencies, chewing up time and money. The free access of the information helps provide equality of information and technological acceleration for those able to access it, said Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, UNFPA executive director, in a news release.
Steve Lucas, SAP general manager of business analytics and technology, said reaching the new global population height provides an opportunity for quantitative capabilities and awareness of the data behind the big number.
“The UNFPA will be better equipped to inspire governments, NGOs, the private sector, media, academia and individuals to take actions that will have a socially positive impact on the world," Lucas said in a news release on the dashboards.
The UN estimated that the global population surpassed 7 billion this week. (The U.S. Census Bureau and other global agencies have pinpointed a different time period within the next few months for the population milestone.)
