A new IDC study has highlighted the fact that examining the server installed base and asset value is an increasingly important focus for effectively planning future sales into the mature Western European server market. While there is still some scope for placing new types of machines into new locations, the vast majority of servers purchased in the Western European region are replacing existing systems.
The Western European server market contains 5.5 million units worth 17 billion euros, with HP and IBM products representing 59 percent of the installed base. Replacement and upgrade issues are therefore key to tapping into this type of mature market. IDC's study, European Server Installed Base Market Shares and Forecasts 2004-2009, examines the reasons why most vendors are facing difficulties accessing this important franchising opportunity.
