Companies introduce the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare

The use of deep learning, machine learning and other artificial intelligence approaches in healthcare is rapidly increasing. Over the next two days, Health Data Management highlights companies bringing a variety of approaches to the use of AI in the industry. Today’s list includes 25 companies; yesterday, we featured 15 vendors with artificial intelligence offerings in healthcare.

Health Catalyst

Health Catalyst is embedding machine learning as a core capability across the company’s entire product line in a technology initiative called catalyst.ai. It says optimized machine learning models are now built into every Health Catalyst application, enabling organizations to leverage the technology for purposes such as identifying patients who are most likely to acquire infections or those who may have trouble paying medical bills.

IBM Watson Health

IBM’s Watson initiative is perhaps one of the best well-known and highly promoted AI initiative on the planet. It launched Watson Health in 2015, and now IBM is pursuing several initiatives and relationships within healthcare. Watson Health is meant to help physicians, researchers, insurers and patients use big data, analytics and mobile technology to achieve better health outcomes, calling the business unit IBM’s “moonshot” in healthcare. At HIMSS17, IBM announced expanded capabilities for the Watson Platform for Health Cloud and a specialized Watson Health Consulting Services unit dedicated to helping clients and partners across the healthcare ecosystem capture the business opportunity of cognitive computing in medicine.

Intel

Intel, a long-time powerhouse in computing technology, is taking advantage of its expertise to create more offerings in AI for healthcare organizations. In clinical or distributed care settings, facilitating collaborative workflows and customized treatments is crucial. Using data analytics and clinical decision support, technology can help clinicians deliver higher quality, more effective care. It’s also pursuing partnerships. For one, the University of California San Francisco and Intel are working together to create a deep learning analytics platform that will deliver clinical decision support and predictive analytics capabilities to its users. In another, the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and Intel seek to integrate genomic data from a range of sources to develop new ways for treating diseases. Broad and Intel have announced a five-year, $25 million collaboration, establishing the Intel-Broad Center for Genomic Data Engineering.

Imagen Technologies

Imagen’s initial focus is on building AI-based software that can detect clinically meaningful pathologies within medical images, with the aim of keeping patients healthy by delivering novel insights to support early disease identification and improved patient management across episodes of care. Imagen’s clinical team is comprised of radiologists and surgeons from Mayo Clinic, Stanford Hospital, Hospital for Special Surgery, Memorial Hermann, Mount Sinai, Harborview Medical Center and others. Imagen’s technical team is comprised of machine learning experts and engineers with experience building technology and products.

Jvion

Jvion offers a cognitive clinical science machine that serves as a high-performance appliance. It activates recommendations that help healthcare providers who need patient-level predictions, prioritizations, interventions and suggestions in making treatment decisions. The machine delivers the action-level recommendations, enabled by a cognitive engine. Jvion’s cognitive clinical science machine includes broad clinical application vectors that, when applied to specific patients, deliver individualized prioritizations, interventions and suggestions within two weeks.

Microsoft Healthcare NExT

Microsoft is beginning to offer AI services in healthcare, betting its prowess in cloud services and artificial intelligence can help it expand. The new initiative, called Healthcare NExT, will combine work from existing industry players and Microsoft's Research and AI units to help doctors reduce data entry tasks, triage sick patients more efficiently and ease outpatient care. Healthcare NExT is a new initiative that will integrate research and health technology product development, as well as establish a new model at Microsoft for strategic health industry partnerships. Microsoft will give resources to its partners to apply AI to healthcare. Microsoft also announced Microsoft AI in Health Partner Alliance which is a group of partners focused on advancing health technology. Members of this alliance will receive unique training and access to Microsoft technologies, engineering expertise and data sets.

NextHealth Technologies

NextHealth Technologies is a prescriptive analytics and consumer engagement company that aims to reduce medical costs. NextHealth’s SaaS platform orchestrates prescriptive analytics, behavioral economics and multi-channel consumer engagement. The company has succeeded in delivering $130 – $144 per member per year in medical claims costs reductions among targeted Medicaid and commercial populations. NextHealth offers an at-risk managed services contract based on outcomes.
