Modern organizations are distributed, flattened and highly siloed sets of resources, very unlike the vertically integrated companies of years past. All this disunification makes it difficult to create common vision and shared responsibility for outcomes.

At last month's 25 Top Information Manager Symposium, a panel of experts representing four top U.S. corporations and institutions gave their thoughts on this new environment and you can see their response in a short video clip here.

"If you don't have a vision or visionary who helps drive and unify the disparate of siloed groups, you end up having this problem of demand management, whereby you get a lot of requests that are not telling a story over the course of a year ... I find myself as an information architect or officer collecting those stories and creating a vision for the organization..."
- Joel Vengco, chief information architect, Boston Medical Center
