The End of a Host-Based Replication Era

July 26, 2010 – Vision Solutions Inc. finalized the acquisition of Windows, Linux and cloud-data recovery provider Double-Take Software today for $242 million in cash – three times Double-Take's fiscal 2009 revenue, according to Gartner analysts.

Backed by private equity investor Thoma Bravo, the acquisition is expected to expand Vision Solutions’ iSeries and AIX availability and recovery offerings as well as its distribution capabilities in the Windows and open systems markets.

Double-Take’s acquisition represents the end of an era, Forrester Analysts Donna Scott and Dave Russell said in a report last month (“Vision Solutions Broadens Its Portfolio with Double-Take Acquisition”). One of the first host-based replication tools for the Windows market will be under the wing of Vision Solutions now, adding a high-growth operating system environment to its iSeries and AIX recovery solutions.

Scott and Russell view the acquisition as positive. By buying into a new growth operating system platform – Windows – the company should be able to soften the potential blow of a downturn in the iSeries market and dependence on the AIX market, the analysts stated in a report (“Vision Solutions Will Boost Portfolio with Double-Take Buy”) this spring.

The companies expect to see synergies in their combined business, because high availability and data replication products are increasingly seen as key to disaster recovery – and to planning for it, Jean S. Bozman, research vice president of IDC's Enterprise Platforms Group was quoted to say. “Both types of software are essential ingredients of business continuity, as they allow restart of applications and access to business data.”
