August 25, 2009 – Teradata Corporation released Teradata Virtual Storage.
The new software is “temperature aware.” It works based on data access patterns, identifying the most frequently used data and least and placing them accordingly on storage units working at different speeds for cost optimization, according to the Teradata release. The placement of “hot” and “cold” data occurs without user intervention, applying automated lifecycle management to data as its relevance shifts over time.
With virtualization, the new product adds storage capacity to maximize performance, adding larger disk drivers to existing system configurations, according to the company release.
Krish Krishnan, president and chief executive officer for Sixth Sense Advisors, was quoted in the release to say that Teradata Virtual Storage works as customer needs grow, allowing them to add substantial amounts of storage to existing data warehouses without new system purchase of the need to re-architect.
